As the central bank of the Republic of Poland, the National Bank of Poland shall take actions seeking monetary stability and stability of the financial system, aiming to create the foundations of long-term economic growth.

The NBP's tasks and shape of the banking system are as specified in Art. 227 of the Constitution of the RP and by the Act on the National Bank of Poland and the Banking Act, passed by Parliament (the Sejm) on 29 August 1997.

The basic objective of NBP activity shall be to maintain price stability. In the Monetary Policy Guidelines for the Year 2003, the Monetary Policy Council set the inflation target for the end of 2003 at the level 3% +/- 1 percentage point. Thus, the strategic target to lower the inflation rate to the level below 4% by the end of 2003, which was accepted in the Medium-Term Monetary Policy Strategy for the Years 1999-2003, has been specified. Setting the target at the level 3% with the fluctuation range +/- 1 percentage point means leaving the phase of inflation lowering and switching into the phase of stabilizing the inflation at a low level.

Within tasks performed in the name of the stability of the domestic financial system, the NBP shall participate in exercising banking supervision, taking actions as regards payment systems and promoting development of a secure infrastructure for the financial market. Factors favourable to the performing of those tasks include, inter alia: the monitoring and reviewing of the situation on the financial markets and the economic situation as well as close cooperation with institutions supervising the other segments of the financial market.

Educational projects are an important element of NBP activity. They aim at propagating knowledge of the economy and financial markets among the public. By organising and initiating scientific research, the NBP shall contribute to the growth of economic awareness in society and to an improvement in the level of economic knowledge of the State authorities and the financial sector.

While performing all its functions the National Bank of Poland shall consider its customers' expectations and needs very important. To this end it shall implement modern standards of customer service, in this way raising the quality of provided services.
